5) Major sin is not paying Zakat
The word “Zakat” mentioned in the Qur’an more than 33 times, in different places of the Qur’an. The Zakat paid on one’s wealth is so called because it purifies wealth, and it is a means of increasing it, blessing it and making it more beneficial, and means of assisting one to use it in doing good deeds.
Allah, the Most High, says in Surah Al Imran 180:
„And let not those who greedily hold back the gifts which Allah has bestowed on them of His Bounty (Allah has given to them from His Grace) think that it is good for them (and so they do not pay the obligatory Zakat).
No, it will be worse for them; soon shall the things which they greedily withheld will be tired to their necks like a twisted collar on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Well-Acquainted with all that you do“.
And in Surah Fussilat (explained in detail) 6-7:
„And woe to (polytheists) those who join gods with Allah, Those who give not regular Charity, and they are disbelievers in the Hereafter“.
Allah says in surat Tawbah 34-35:
„O you who believe! there are indeed many among the priests and monks, who in (there) Falsehood (lies) eat up the substance of men and block (them) from the way of Allah. And there are those who bury gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah: announce unto them a most grievous penalty“.
„On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be burned on their foreheads, their flanks, their flanks, and their backs. “This is the (treasure, wealth) which ye buried for yourselves: taste you, then, the (treasures, wealth) you buried!“
The Prophet Muhammad says: A wealthy person who has got gold and silver, but does not pay the Zakat due on the same, (should know that) his gold and silver will be melted on the day of Judgment and Converted into slabs which will then be heated in the fire of Hell, and then has sides, his forehead, and his back will be branded therewith.
When these slabs will get cold, they will be heated up once more in the furnace of the Hell, the branding will be continued throughout the day, the duration of which will be equal to fifty thousand years, and the case of all people will have been decided bu this time and they will be shown their way either to the Hell or to Paradise.
The Prophet Muhammad says:
„there are three people who will enter the fire; an oppressive leader, a wealthy person who does not pay Allah’s right from his wealth and proud person“.
Ibn Abbas r,a, (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
whoever has enough property to make pilgrimage or to pay Zakat but he does no, will ask Allah to return (to this world) when dying. Someone said: Ibn Abbas, fear Allah, No one asks for return but the unbelievers.
Then Ibn Abbas read Allah’ saying; And spent something (in cherity) out of the substance which We have bestowed on you, before death should come to any of you and he should say:
O my Lord! Why did You not give me relief for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity, and I should have been one of those who do good deeds. Sura Al-Munafiqun 10.
Abu Hurayrah r,a, related that the Prophet said;
„Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay the Zakat of his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two black spots over its eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say: I’m your treasure“. Then he recites the following verse:
And let not those who greedily hold back the gifts which Allah has bestowed on them of His Bounty (Allah has given to them from His Grace) think that it is good for them (and so they do not pay the obligatory Zakat).
No, it will be worse for them; soon shall the things which they greedily withheld will be tired to their necks like a twisted collar on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Well-Acquainted with all that you do“. Sura Ali Imran 180.
It was related that the Messenger of Allah said: „Five (actions) entail (punishments): they asked, what does it mean? He said:
1. Whenever some people break a covenant, Allah will entice their enemy to attack them.
2. If they rule in other than Allah’s law, they will be plagued with poverty.
3. If indecency (adultery) prevails them, there will be more deaths.
4. If they give short scales or weights they will be deprived of tillage and will suffer the barren years,
5. if they do not pay Zakat, there will be no rain“.
