The advices of the Prophet a,s, to the Muslims

The manners of sneezing and yawning

–       We spoke before about the manners of giving greetings of peace.

–       Then we spoke about the manners of going to the restroom.

–       We spoke about the manners of eating and drinking.

–       We spoke about the manners of sleeping.

–       And to night we will talk about the manners of the sneezing and yawning.

The Prophet a,s, said: Verily, Allah loves sneezing and detests yawning, so if one of you sneezes and (then) praises Allah (Al-Hamdulillah) it is a right upon every Muslim who hears him to say to him, (Yarhamukallahu) May Allah have mercy on you. As for yawning, then verily it is from Shaitan only, so if one of you yawns, then let him ward it off, as much as he is able to. Imam Buhari.

 The manners of sneezing

Al-Bara ibn Azib r,a, said: The Messenger of Allah ordered us with seven (commands) and forbade us from seven (prohibited matters) he ordered us to follow funeral, to visit the sick, to answer (accept the invitation of) a person who invites, to help the one who is wronged, to fulfill one’s oath, to return greetings of peace, and to do Tashmeet of a person who sneezes (to say Yarhamukallah) when he says (Alhadulillah) after the sneezes.

The Messenger of Allah said: So if one of you sneezes and (then) praises Allah, it is a right upon every Muslim who hears him to say to him, Yarhamukallah (may Allah have mercy on you).

We should say; May Allah have mercy on you, only after the sneezer praises Allah.

Anas ibn Malik r,a, said: Two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet of Allah, he said Yarhamukallah. To one of them but not to the other, the latter man said: O Messenger of Allah! You said: May Allah have mercy on you, to him but not to me? The Prophet said: Verily, he praised Allah, and you did not praise Allah. Imam Bukhari.

In another hadith, Abu Musa Al-Ash’aree r,a, reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah say; When one of you sneezes and praises Allah, then say to him; May Allah have mercy on you (Yarhamukallah). And if he does not praise Allah, then do not say to him; May Allah have mercy on you. Imam Muslim.

Abu Hurairah related that the Prophet said: When one of you sneezes, then let him say; Allah praise is to Allah, and let his brother or companion say to him; May Allah have mercy on you. And when he says: May Allah have mercy on you, and then let him (the sneezer) say. May Allah guide you and rectify your situation.

One should try to keep the sound of his sneeze s low as possible.

Abu Hurairah r,a, related this hadith: When the Prophet would sneeze, he would cover his face with his hand or with his garment, and with it he would lower the sound of it.

One should say; May Allah have mercy on you for three sneezes, if the person sneezes more than that, then he has a cold.

Salamah ibn Al-Akwa reported that he heard Prophet a,s, say after a man sneezed in his presence, May Allah have mercy on you, then man then sneezes again and Messenger of Allah said to him: The man is suffering from a cold. Imam Muslim.

If someone of the non-Muslims sneezes what should we say to them?

Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari r,a, said: The Jews feign sneezing in the presence of Prophet a,s, hoping that he will would say to them: May Allah have mercy on you. But he would instead say: May Allah guide you and rectify your situation.  Imam Abu Davud.

 The rules of yawning

The Messenger of Allah said: As for yawning, then it is from the Satan only.

Imam Navavi r,h, said: Yawning usually occurs when the body is heavy, full, relaxed, and inclined towards laziness. As for suppressing a yawn, doing so is recommended. Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said; Yawning is from the Satan, so if one of you yawn, then let him hold it back as much as he can. For indeed, when one of you says; Haa (in the act of yawning) the Satan laughs.

Abu Saeed Al-Khudri r,a, reported that the Messenger of Allah said: When one of you yawns, then let him old his hand over his mouth, for indeed, the Satan enters.

Imam Ahmad related the Hadith; when one of you yawn during prayer, then let him place his hand over his mouth, for verily, the Satan enters with a yawn. Imam Muslim, Imam Ahmad, Imam Abu Dawod.
