Uputa – hidajet

12-dio

 Guidance – Hidayah

part 12

Slide1Muslims plead to be guided to the straight path at least seventeen times a day due to the obligation of reciting surat al-Fatiha1 in salah (the 5 daily prayers). How many of us have reflected on the nature of this guidance and the path that we are supposed to be upon?

The word for gift (hadiyya) in Arabic also comes from the same root letters as the word for guidance (hidaya). Religious guidance is the greatest gift that a person can possess. It is also something that we do not control or own, but rather Allah bestows it upon us in an act of infinite mercy and grace?

Allah says in surah Yunus 9: Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – their Lord will guide them because of their faith. Beneath them rivers will flow in the Gardens of Pleasure.

In this ayah Allah promises the happy blessings for those who believed in Allah and His Messengers. And for those who have complied with what they were commanded to follow. The promise is that Allah will guide them because of their faith, or it may mean through their faith. Their faith will assist them on the Day of Resurrection.

And this is what we need most. Just because we are believers, it doesn’t mean that we don’t need guidance. We need guidance in every moment of our lives. So Allah will guide them because of their iman. We cannot live without the guidance and tawfiq (ability to do good) of Allah.

You need al-Haadi. Maybe you are having some sort of mid-life crisis. You need al-Haadi. And we cannot for one moment believe that there is no way out and no right path. Allah (swt) says in a hadithqudsi (record of the words of the Prophet peace be upon him): O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you. (Muslim).

Allah said in surah Al-Ankabut 69: And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways.  Meaning we will help them to follow Our path in this world and the Hereafter. And so we have to strive. We have to search. It will be hard. And there will be moments of confusion. But the Prophet taught us: Know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship,” (Tirmidhi).

Huda here means the faith that resides in the heart, and only Allah is able to create it in the heart of the servants. Allah said in surah Al-Qasas 56: Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

And Allah says in surah Al-Baqarah 272: Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills.

Allah said in surah Al-Kahf 17: He whom Allah guides is the [rightly] guided, but he whom He leaves astray – never will you find for him a protecting guide.
