Kaže uzvišeni u suri Nur 22: I neka oproste i neka pređu.

Imam Buahri i Muslim.

Sha’ban – The Opportunity To Attain Allah’s Forgiveness

Slide1Alhamdulillah, two weeks from now Muslims will usher in a blessed month; a month where the rewards for all our good deeds will be doubled. This month is better than any other months. It is also known as the month of forgiveness. The month I am referring to is none other than Ramadan Al-Mubarak.

May we be among Allah’s servants who are able to increase our takwa towards Allah especially during this month? However, we should not increase our deeds and strive to gain Allah’s forgiveness only in the month of Ramadan. Let us follow in the footsteps of the beloved messenger, the man who is loved by all who acknowledge that they are his ummah. The Prophet Muhammad was always seeking Allah’s forgiveness, and it was narrated that he would make istighfar to Allah, Lord of the Universe, no less than 70 to 100 times.

If the Prophet who is protected from any sins and whose sins are forgiven by Allah! Or what is termed as ma’sum, is always seeking Allah’s forgiveness, then should we not strive for even more than that?

Know that Allah has granted us many opportunities and time for us to seek His forgiveness, and this includes performing worship during the night of Nisfu Sha’ban. May we be among those who have obtained Allah’s forgiveness? Allahuma Amin. Rasulullah once said:Verily Allah sees the night of the middle of Sha’ban. And He forgives all His creations, except those who are mushrik and those who are in enmity. Sunan Ibnu Majah.

There are many lessons that we can learn from this hadith. Among them:  First: Seeking Allah’s forgiveness. As humans, we cannot run away from committing sins and making mistakes. We have all committed sins from time to time, whether we realise it or otherwise. That is why the heart of a believer is always striving to find the opportunity to make taubah and to return to Allah, with remorse over one’s wrongdoings.

Thus, imagine how happy a mu’min will feel when the mu’min realises that Allah has granted mankind the opportunity to make taubah and to seek His forgiveness. Hence, we should not waste the opportunity and should increase making istighfar and to make taubah.

Remember, no matter how many sins we have committed, Allah is the Most Forgiving. Allah says in surah Az-Zumar verse 53: Say: O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Second:  Keeping good relations. While we continue to make istighfar to Allah we should not ignore our relationship with others. Be it Muslims or non-Muslims. Remember, while Allah is Most Forgiving and the One who Allows Taubah, humankind may not necessarily forgive us.

Remember the saying of Rasulullah towards those who will be bankrupts on the Day of Judgement: Among my Ummah, the one who is bankrupt is the one who will come on the Day of Resurrection with prayer and fasting and Zakah (to his credit), but he will come having insulted this one, slandered that one, consumed the wealth of this one and shed the blood of that one, and beaten that one. So they will all be given some of his hasanaat, and when his hasanaat run out, before judgment is passed, some of their sins will be taken and cast onto him, then he will be cast into the Fire.   Sahih Muslim.

This is a crucial reminder to us. Allah reminds us through this hadith that hostility between one another will lead to failure in trying to attain Allah’s forgiveness on the night of Nisfu Sha’ban.

If we want Allah to forgive us, then we should forgive others and be willing to forget their mistakes. This also falls as part of what it means to be good and kind to other people. Allah says in surah An-Nur verse 22: …and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

When we lighten the burden of our fellow humankind, such as by forgiving their mistakes, this is part of being good to others. Thus, this will definitely not be ignored by Allah s.w.t. Other examples of lightening the burden of others include writing off the loan one has taken from us. In fact, just for doing so Allah will forgive the lender’s sins.

Rasulullah said: A man used to give loans to the people and used to say to his servant, ‘If the debtor is poor, forgive him, so that Allah may forgive us.’ So when he met Allah (after his death), Allah forgave him. Sahih Bukhari and Muslim

Hopefully, Allah will forgive all of our sins during these blessed months of Sha’ban and Ramadan. And Allah bestow upon us His guidance so that we may be among those who not only recite the verses of the Qur’an, but also continuously strive to uphold the practices taught in the Qur’an, including performing good deeds, (towards Allah and also humankind) as well as to maintain good manners. Finally, we should seek Allah’s forgiveness and we should forgive those who may have wronged us. By doing so, hopefully our hearts will be cleansed and we can be better prepared to usher in the month of Ramadan. Amin
